The world agreed in 2022 to protect at least 30% of land and ocean by 2030 (30×30). By achieving 30×30 we rechart humanity’s course. Protecting coastal waters is critical given the density of marine life and people on the world’s coastlines. Over a decade of work across the globe, Dynamic Planet witnessed a powerful fact: when the ocean is fully protected from extractive activities, it recovers faster than we ever imagined, and communities benefit with better fishing, more tourism, and more economic revenue. Well-managed MPAs exemplify Dynamic Planet’s vision of businesses that restore nature. Yet fully protected areas remain scarce and are often seen as costly luxuries rather than profitable conservation business opportunities. To meet the 30% target by the end of the decade, and to conserve the areas of our ocean that are most vital to protecting frontline communities and global food security, we need 190,000 new small marine protected areas in coastal regions around the world. We created Revive Our Ocean as a new model to help close this gap.
