€11 Billion/year - Net cost to society due to bottom trawling
Katherine D Millage, Juan Mayorga, Sara Orofino et al. The value of bottom trawling in Europe
Bottom trawling is one of the most destructive fishing practices on the planet. Large weighted nets drag across the seafloor, destroying habitats, depleting marine life, and releasing massive amounts of carbon stored in ocean sediments.
Despite its devastating impact, bottom trawling continues in many marine protected areas (MPAs) worldwide.
Revive Our Ocean supports the growing movement to end bottom trawling in MPAs by amplifying the work of leading organizations and coalitions driving change through policy, advocacy, and public engagement.
The movement to eliminate bottom trawling brings together powerful campaigns like the Protect Our Catch Coalition to Ban Bottom Trawling, the Transform Bottom Trawling coalition, Together For The Ocean, and the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition.
These efforts are backed by a broad alliance of organizations including Bloom, ClientEarth, Oceana, Seas At Risk, EJF, Greenpeace, WWF UK, Marine Conservation Society, Flora and Fauna, Our Seas, Blue Marine Foundation, Bertarelli Foundation, and others—all working to eliminate bottom trawling and protect our ocean.
By supporting this collective action, we can protect marine ecosystems, ensure healthier fisheries, and help combat climate change.
