'Revive Our Ocean' initiative launched to protect coastal waters

Our ocean is in crisis

Overfishing, ocean warming, and pollution are pushing marine ecosystems to the brink of collapse. We need a healthy ocean to sustain our communities, livelihoods, food security, and economies.

Without urgent action, we risk irreversible damage.

70%

of marine biodiversity is in coastal waters

40%

of us live on coastlines, securing the livelihoods of almost half of humanity

3 billion

of us eat food from the ocean

Yet only 8% of the ocean is in some form of protection, and a mere 3% is truly protected from fishing.

But it’s not too late.

Together, we can revive our ocean.

To restore the ocean’s vital ecosystems for marine life and our planet, we must effectively protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.

The time is now to accelerate and scale coastal protection globally by inspiring, enabling, and equipping local communities to quadruple current conservation efforts to reach this global target.

Coastal Communities

Create new, effective coastal marine protected areas

that benefit marine life, people, the economy, and our climate.

Effective Protection

Improve existing marine protected areas

by ending destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling within their boundaries.

Impacts of Marine Protected Areas

Protect Biodiversity

Highly protected marine protected areas are very effective in restoring and preserving biodiversity, as well as enhancing ecosystem resilience.

Boost Seafood Production

The creation of marine protected areas that safeguard at least 30% of the ocean would boost seafood production by over 8 million metric tonnes compared with business-as-usual.
